Roosters, and Why Your Flock Needs One
Did you know that a good rooster is a huge blessing for your flock? A good rooster will keep the peace amongst the ladies, find and share nummie things to eat, and not only escort the ladies to the nesting boxes, but guard them whilst they lay, and sing their praises when they finish. But most importantly, he is constantly scanning for danger and will give up his life to protect his hens from harm.
A good rooster will keep the peace
Yes, every flock will have a pecking order, but if the lowly hens are getting hassled too much, a good rooster will intervene, teaching the more aggressive hens how to behave.
A good rooster will TidBit
A good rooster will find things to eat, pick them up, call to the ladies, and let them take them out of his mouth. This is called TidBitting, and it is quite sweet to watch.
A good rooster will assist with Egg-Laying
Not only will he find nice snug places for the ladies to lay, he will stand guard while they do so, and then join them in the Egg Song, singing their praises for all to hear.
A good rooster will Defend the Flock at all costs
A good rooster is constantly scanning for potential threats to the flock. Of all the roosters here at Flower Feather Farm, we find that the Swedish Flower Hen roosters are the most vigilant, always the first to call the alert.
We hope that they don’t ever have to, but if a predator does come after them, the roosters will run towards the threat, whilst the hens run away. Rooster may not survive the encounter, but he will usually delay the predator long enough for the hens to get away.
