How do I add Littles to Bigs?

I often end up with mixed ages that I need to house together. I can’t just toss the Littles into BigLand or they will be bullied. Here is what I do.

In the evening, I change out the bedding and take away toys and furniture and add new toys and furniture and move things around.

  • I put the Littles in and let them get oriented.

  • I put the Bigs in

  • I add Grubblies or minced scrambled eggs with a light drizzle of NutraDrench (so gourmet!).

  • I turn off the lights — not the heat, just the lights. Check out this Brooder Tips post for some important info on what we use for heat. The Bigs are so disoriented by the changes and so excited by the mealworms they overlook the new roommates. In the dark, they all snuggle and go to sleep. By morning, they are a flock.

  • If any of Bigs are scheduled to move up, I do so at this time, so the pecking order is all amuddle anyway.
